Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid 2

Debuted: Halloween 2010

Awards: N/A

Vocaloid is a computer software program that houses different synthesized voices and notes. This was first released in Japan and shortly after hitting the shelves took off among the music-making crowd. Vocaloid 2 started off with just tracks sung by Hatsune Miku, and then had updates released featuring other popular Vocaloids. However, the artwork on each box helped to define the characters that each software featured, thus spawning a cosplay phenomenon that revolves around a software program.

 How I Made It

After attending Anime Boston this year, I came home with several figures featuring Vocaloids. When Ember saw Miku (and helped me assemble her) she told me she wanted to dress up as the "blue-haired girl" for Halloween. I wasn’t going to let her down!

Ember helped me do the fabric shopping and we picked out some really pretty fabrics. Using no patterns, I created the entire outfit for her. I used foam for the little details (the yellow pin on Miku’s shirt, two black pins on her tie, all the details on her headphones) and I used a large piece of foam for the headphones, which I painted blank before detailing. I sewed belt clips into her skirt to hold up Miku’s "skirt chain". I got an older pair of black shoes for Ember and taped the bottoms using colored duct tape to match the blue of Miku’s accent color. In some spare time, I even created two, plush leeks for Ember to carry with her as Miku seems to do.

Once Halloween was here, it was too chilly out for Ember to wear the cosplay outside, but she did model long enough for me to snap some cute pictures. I’d wanted to make a Vocaloid cosplay for a while, but never thought of making it for Ember. I’m glad I did - she makes an adorable Miku!
