Emperor Penguin Chick (Original Design)
Debuted: Halloween 2008

Penguins are adorable birds! My daughter has always liked them from the moment she saw the March of the Penguins movie at about 3 months old. We thought maybe she liked all black and white animals, but after several tests on this, it because clear that penguins are her favorite!
How I Made It
Because we usually have chilly Halloween nights here, I made the costume out of polar fleece and felt. The pants were the only part store-bought. The top is long with an elastic bottom so it is a snug fit around her thighs. It has a snap closer on the back, and the sleeves are longer over her hands and cut in the shape of flippers. I even added a tail to the back of the shirt!
The hat was the hardest part for me to do. Again, this is made from polar fleece with felt for the details around the eyes and on the beak. I used stuffed animal eyes for the eyes of the penguin and covered the back of them with felt so they wouldn’t dig into her head when wearing the hat. It has a string closer that ties into a bow under her chin and I added a small, pink bow to the head so that people knew she was a girl penguin chick.
I cut out feet from black polar fleece and taped them to her slippers, so it looked like she also had penguin feet to match her costume. She loved wearing it and was simply the cutest penguin of the evening!
